Founder and CEO of ImFusion. He has 20 years of research experience in
medical image computing and computer-assisted interventions, most of it in industry. After
obtaining his doctoral degree from Prof. Navab's group in Munich, he worked a few years at
Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton, NJ. He has conducted numerous projects from early
feasibility to product implementation, providing innovative solutions for various clinical
applications. From receiving the MICCAI Young Scientist Award in 2007, he has remained actively
involved in the academic community with regular publications, and is also acting as adjunct
professor for the faculty of computer science at Technische Universität München (TUM).

Dr. Alexander Ladikos

Founding member and CTO of ImFusion with more than 15 years of experience
in the areas of computer vision and medical image processing. Alexander obtained his PhD at
Technische Universität München for work on multi-camera occlusion detection for robotic surgery
environments. During this time he has been a visiting researcher at Telekom Laboratories in
Berlin and INRIA Grenoble in France. His expertise spans a wide range of topics with a
particular emphasis on 3D computer vision, 3D surface reconstruction and model based tracking.
He has authored many scientific articles and patents and is a regular reviewer for all major
computer vision and medical image processing conferences.
He is also responsible for the ISO 13485 compliance and quality management processes at
ImFusion.

Dr. Raphael Prevost
Senior Research Scientist
Head of Machine Learning
Raphael Prevost studied in France where he obtained a MSc. in applied
mathematics and a MSc. in machine learning and computer vision in 2010. He then spent three
years in Philips Research working on image segmentation during his PhD.
He authored multiple articles, book chapters and patents; he is laureate of the Dauphine
Foundation 2014 Award, received the AMIES 2014 Prize for research in mathematics with industrial
impact, and the MICCAI 2015 best reviewer award.
Since 2013, Raphael has worked on various image analysis topics and has driven R&D in terms of
image segmentation and machine learning at ImFusion.
Christian Schulte zu Berge holds a Diploma in Computer Science from the
University of Münster where he graduated with his thesis on Diffusion Tensor Imaging
visualization. He then pursued a PhD on real-time processing for advanced visualization of
medical ultrasound at Technische Universität München and enriched his academic work with a
stay at Siemens Corporate Technology in Princeton, NJ.
Christian joined the ImFusion team in 2016 where he combines his background
on large-scale software development with his academic expertise in visualization and computer
graphics.
Oliver Zettinig holds a Master's degree in Biomedical Computing and pursued
his PhD on advanced, interventional ultrasound imaging techniques at Technische Universität
München. During his academic career, he conducted research visits at Siemens Corporate
Technology in Princeton, NJ, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and received the
MICCAI Young Scientist Award in 2013.
Oliver joined ImFusion in 2017 and strives to further push the boundaries
in ultrasound-guided navigated procedures.

Matthias Wieczorek studied Computer Science at Technische Universität
München and graduated with his thesis on Sparse regularization for Phase-Contrast Computed
Tomography. Additionally, to these studies he holds a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics. He continued
to work on problems related to modern Computed Tomography during his PhD on Anisotropic X-ray
Dark-field tomography.
Matthias joined ImFusion in 2017 and continues to improve the value gained
from tomographic imaging methods.
Marco Esposito holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from Technische Universität München,
where he also pursued a PhD on Collaborative Robotic Medical Imaging.
Previously he obtained a B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Pisa.
During his academic career he conjugated research and contribution to the open source robotic
community.
His work was presented at top-tier conferences such as MICCAI and ROSCON, and received the
IJCARS Best Paper Award.
Marco joined ImFusion in 2019, with the objective of making robots friendly and useful partners
for doctors and surgeons.
Judith Kurzmaier studied Biochemistry at Technische Universität München where she obtained her
Bachelor's degree.
First professional experience were gained in customer support at GOP Varieté Theater München.

Markus Habert
Senior Software Engineer
Markus Habert studied Computer Science at Technische Universität München (TUM), completed
internships in several industries and wrote his master thesis on multi-modal image registration
with ImFusion. In 2014 he joined ImFusion as a full-time employee, where he employs his strong
coding and software architecture skills combined with his medical imaging experience.
Olga Gavranovic obtained her Master's degree in Computational Science and
Engineering at Technische Universität München. She wrote her thesis on augmented touch
interfaces for head-mounted displays at the augmented reality company Metaio. Olga has been
working as a full-time employee at ImFusion on surface reconstruction and industrial vision
applications since late 2015.
Simon Jagoda joined up with ImFusion part-time in 2014 while a master level student at LMU
Munich's department of physics. He has since finished his thesis on radiative feedback and
efficient simulation of laser-plasma interactions and became a full-time employee in 2016.
There, he employs his skills especially for image reconstruction problems which require detailed
understanding of acquisition physics.

Dr. Marijn Stollenga
Senior Research Scientist
Marijn Stollenga graduated in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Groningen and pursued
his PhD on Humanoid Perception and Control at the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA in the group of Prof.
Jürgen Schmidhuber. From 2016 - 2018 he was a postdoctoral
researcher at the TU München and worked on combining Virtual Reality and Machine Learning to
train intelligent agents.
He authored several papers applying deep learning in varying domains, ranging from automatic
medical segmentation to robotic control.
Marijn joined the ImFusion team in 2018 where he continues to apply his knowledge to new
challenges.
Martin Matilla holds a Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications and Audiovisual Systems and
obtained his Master's degree in Computer Vision at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain. His
Master's thesis dealt with real-time rendering of 360º video featuring multiview stereo
estimation for VR.
Martin brings over four years of experience as a Research Developer in the field of Image
Processing and Multiview Reconstruction.

Mattia Lupetti studied Physics at the University of Pisa and pursued his PhD at LMU Muenchen at
the chair of Computational and Plasma Physics, where he developed new concepts for imaging
ultrashort laser pulses on nanostructured surfaces.
After four years working as Software Engineer in the Artificial Intelligence department at
Brainlab, he joined ImFusion in late 2019, where he brings his experience in researching,

Alexander Schwer is a graduate of the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg (Dual Study of
B.Eng. Electrical Engineering and Electronics Technician) and Technische Universität München

Electrical and Software Engineering as a student at MAN Diesel & Turbo SE and Rohde & Schwarz,

Ilja Manakov studied Physics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich where he completed the
Medical Physics curriculum with a Master specialization. After graduating, he started his PhD in
Computer Science at the chair for Database Systems and Data Mining, while being employed as a
Research Scientist at the LMU University Clinic. In his PhD work, he focuses on Represenation,
Self-Supervised and Unsupervised Learning. Ilja regularly authors scientific papers and received
amongst others the Best Paper Award at MICCAI DART 2019.

Academic Liaison Manager
Julia Rackerseder holds a Master's degree in Bioinformatics from LMU and TU Munich. Since 2016
she has been a researcher and PhD candidate at the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures
with strong focus on multi-modal medical image registration and segmentation in a neurosurgical
setting.
Julia brings 6+ years of professional experience to ImFusion: she is Co-Founder of the NPO

Thomas Kanzok studied Computer Science at Chemnitz University of Technology (CUT) where he

Senior Research Scientist
Rafael Rojas graduated in Mechanical engineering at the Sapienza University of Rome with a MSc
thesis on biped locomotion implemented in the Nao Robot. He pursued his PhD in Applied and
Theoretical Mechanics at his alma mater, where he focused his research on the application of
non-traditional methods of optimal control theory in vibration control and energy harvesting.
From 2017-2020 Rafael served as research assistant at the Free University of Bozen and worked on

Max obtained an MSc in Physics from Julius-Maximilians Universität Würzburg and an MPhys degree
in Lasers and Optoelectronics from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. For his master thesis, he
studied colocalization and molecular clusters in immunological synapses using direct Stochastic
Optical Reconstruction Microscopy data. During his Ph.D. studies at King’s College London, Max

Federico Gnesotto studied Physics at the University of Padova (Italy) and at the LMU Munich.
After his Master Thesis on Active-Matter he decided to pursue a PhD in Biophysics at the chair
of Statistical and Biological Physics of the LMU Munich. After graduating in 2020, he decided to
take on a new challenge and joined Brainlab as a Software Engineer to work on segmentation and

Dr.-Ing. Max-Heinrich Laves
Senior Research Scientist
Max completed his BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering with a strong focus on medical
technology at the Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. During his Master's, he worked on soft
tissue tracking in stereo endoscopy. He completed a PhD at the same university, where he worked
on uncertainty estimation and calibration with Bayesian neural networks in medical imaging.
Subsequently, Max held a postdoc position at the Technical University Hamburg, where he

2023, Max was a research scientist at Philips Research in Hamburg, where he worked on fracture

As a master's graduate in Biomedical Computing at the Chair for Computer Aided Medical
Procedures, Nikola gained experience in medical imaging technologies, image processing, and

Engineering Automation and Robotics, Nikola has experience in industrial robotics and discrete
manufacturing. As a Research Assistant for Visual Servoing in Human-Robot Collaboration at the

Rüdiger Göbl
Research Scientist
Rüdiger completed his MSc in Computer Science from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and
has a strong focus on ultrasound, software engineering, GPU programming and medical image
reconstruction. He gained valuable professional experiences as Senior Ultrasound Software
Engineer at LUMA Vision as part of the software team, creating innovative ultrasound-based
imaging solution for the cardiac space and as Research Assistant at the Chair for Computer Aided
Medical Procedures at TUM. Rüdiger joined ImFusion in December 2023 and contributes his advanced
skill set to our Ultrasound team.
Davide holds a Master’s degree in Automation Engineering from the University of Pisa focused on
Control Systems, Robotics and Mechatronics. He gained first valuable C++ and Computer Vision
experience during his additional project on hand pose reconstruction from RGB-D images and
during his Master's Degree thesis researching threat detection techniques for Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles. In addition, he has matured 7+ years’ professional experience in designing and
implementing real-time software and algorithms in the fields of Computer Vision, Machine Vision,
Image Retrieval, Augmented Reality and Eye Tracking. Davide joined ImFusion's Machine Learning
team in January 2024.
Martin Vymazal holds an M.Sc. in mechanical engineering and specialized in numerical simulation
of fluid flow from the Czech Technical University in Prague. He continued his academic career in
this field with a PhD in computational fluid dynamics from Free University of Brussels in 2015.
As Postdoctoral Research Associate, Martin was involved in simulation of fluid flow, solving
Navier-Stokes equations with numerical methods, at Imperial College in London. Afterwards, he
also completed a M.Sc. in artificial intelligence from the Queen Mary University in London. His
strong academic background is paired with experiences in industry, e.g. Martin worked in a
computer vision startup in London that develops software for person re-identification and
another computer vision startup that makes driver monitoring systems. Martin joined ImFusion in
February 2024 where he contributes his expertise to our Computed Tomography team and to our
Anatomy and Spine projects.
Oleksandra, known as Sasha, graduated with an honors Bachelor's degree in computer science from
Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. She delved into biomedical research through
internships at ÉTS Montreal and OIST. Sasha specialized in medical applications, obtaining a
Master’s in Biomedical Computing from Technical University of Munich. Her thesis focused on
unsupervised ultrasound segmentation using deep spectral methods. With experience as a Medical
Software Developer at SurgicEye, Sasha now applies her skills at ImFusion since April 2024,
contributing to the Machine Learning and Ultrasound teams.
Maximilian Schlögel graduated the Elite Bachelor’s program in mathematics of the University of
Augsburg and the Technical University of Munich in 2018 and moved onto more practical fields
with a M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Amsterdam with his thesis about

Ahmed Abbas
Senior Research Scientist
Ahmed holds PhD from Saarland University Germany. During his PhD he performed research at Max
Planck Institute for Informatics in the topics related to discrete optimization, machine
learning and computer vision. During his industrial career, Ahmed was employed by ZEISS, Germany
where he performed applied research in the areas related to 3D reconstruction and industrial
manufacturing. Moreover he also worked at LMKR in Pakistan where he developed image processing
algorithms for subsurface data analysis for oil and gas exploration. Ahmed joined ImFusion in
May, 2024
Duofan Jiang studied Automation in a Dual Master's Program jointly offered by TU Berlin and
Shanghai JiaoTong University. He graduated with a thesis on 3D Object Recognition using RGBD
Camera. Duofan gained his initial professional experience at Carl Zeiss Optotechnik GmbH, where
he developed algorithms for image processing and robotics, in addition to maintaining existing
code for a large industrial software. Duofan joined the Vision team in May 2024 as a Senior
Software Engineer specializing in Computer Vision.

Alejandro Nespereira
Software Engineer
Alejandro holds a Master’s degree in Computer Vision from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona,
where he completed his master’s thesis on Deep Learning for Recognition of 3D Objects on Mobile
Devices in collaboration with Catchoom. Before joining ImFusion, Alejandro honed his expertise
as a Senior Software Engineer at Naska.AI and Claitec SL, driving innovative projects in AI and
vision technologies. As a seasoned expert in Machine Learning and Computer Vision with over 8
years of professional experience in software engineering, Alejandro brings a deep understanding
of cutting-edge technologies and a passion for solving complex challenges to our Ultrasound team
since November 2024.

Berfin Kavşut
Working Student
Berfin currently studies MSc. Biomedical Computing at the Technical University of Munich,
focusing on image processing, medical image reconstruction, deep learning, and AI in medicine.
She gained professional experience as project team member at DataBoss where she worked on
Anomaly-Based Network Intrusion Detection System using Big Data. Berfin holds a Bachelor’s
degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. She
joined ImFusion in August 2022 as working student.
While Wenbo Ji is currently pursuing a dual Master’s of Science program, studying Electrical
Engineering and Information Technology at the Technical University of Munich and Computer
Science at Tongji University, China, he joined ImFusion in August 2024 as Master’s thesis
student for researching on 2D/3D point tracking in our Vision team. He also holds a Bachelor's
degree in Mathematics from Nanjing Tech University, China. His expertise lies in Computer
Vision, Deep Learning, and 3D Reconstruction, and we look forward to his scientific insights and
a potential paper publication.

Pascual Tejero Cervera
Intern
Pascual holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the
Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), as well as a Master's in Biomedical Computing from the
Technical University of Munich (TUM). During his time as an AI researcher at the AI in Medicine
(AI-Med) Lab at TUM, he completed a Master's thesis focused on Continual Learning for 3D Organ
Detection. Pascual also gained valuable industry experience at Walaris (Diehl Gruppe), working
as a student in AI and computer vision, where he optimized advanced object detection models.
With expertise in computer vision, object detection, image segmentation, and organ detection,
Pascual joined us in September 2024 as an intern. He is now contributing his knowledge and
passion to our Machine Learning team, where he investigates the potential of large pre-trained
models to speed up and improve the training of models for medical imaging.
Marc holds a Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Automation Engineering and a Master's in
Intelligent Systems from the University of the Balearic Islands, with a thesis on brain tumor
segmentation in MRI scans using deep learning. Currently, Marc is pursuing a Master's in
Biomedical Computing at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Alongside his studies, he
worked as a Student Assistant at the Interdisciplinary Research Lab, Camp Chair at TUM,
contributing to convolutional neural networks (CNN) for image denoising in diffusion MRI images
and collaborating on a spine segmentation and vertebrae labelling project. Before joining his
current role, Marc gained valuable experience as a working student at LUMA Vision, where he
worked on deep learning-based 2D ultrasound image registration and the development of a data
curation tool. His expertise lies in medical image processing, deep learning, and computer
vision. Marc joined ImFusion in September 2024 as intern, bringing his skills to our Machine
Learning team, where he investigates new methods for network conditioning using hyper-networks.
